Diplomacy, deliberation, foreign relations, fun and intellect. These are the few phrases which describe two enthralling days of the debut edition of Global Parliament’16, the debut Model United Nations(MUN) conference held at Don Bosco School, Liluah on 4th and 5th October, 2016. This MUN conference also holds the distinction of being the first school MUN outside Kolkata, in West Bengal, with 16 participating schools from Kolkata and the suburbs
The two day conference commenced with a traditional inaugural ceremony, a welcome address by the Rector of the institution, Rev. Fr. Biji Thomas and an address be the key note speaker, Prof. Koloskar, Vice-Chancellor, Neotia University. Three committees were simulated in Global Parliament’16; United Nations Security Council discussing the threats to the Middle East, the United Nations General Assembly, discussing the South China Sea Crisis and The Parliamentary Ad-Hoc committee, discussing the Armed Forces pecial Forces Act (AFSPA). With seventeen schools from Kolkata, Howrah, Hooghly and Silliguri, this event boasted of 160 delegates and an exemplary executive board, with some of the best MUNers from across the country, Mr Rohan Joshi, Delhi University, Mr Andre Jaggi and Mr Siddharth Sonkar, NUJS Kolkata and Mr Tanumoy Majumdar, National Law University, Patna. The various committees were also vice chaired and directed by Mohit Agarwal, Subham Goyal, Jayant Kakrania and Anirudh Goel, students of the host school with Rishi Pandey as the Secretary General. The admin team and the members of the logistics played a pivotal role in making the conference a grand success. The intense committee sessions were characterized by serious debate and emergencies which included the ISIL taking hold of the stockpile of chemical weapons belonging to the USA. The delegates of all the three committees proved by their resolve that the younger generation holds the responsibility of making the world a better place to live in. Although all were winners, awards for best delegates for the three committees were given out in the closing ceremony, the honours of which was done by the Rector of Don Bosco, Liluah, Fr. Biji Thomas and the Principal, Fr. Sunit Kiro. The award ceremony followed a witty and all encompassing Press Release by the Internal Press. St James, Kolkata emerged as the overall winners of the conference. Overall it was indeed a great experience for each and every one who was associated with this event. Hope the legacy of this event continues.
