Don Bosco School, Liluah organized their Annual Athletic Meet 2013-14 for the students of the senior and technical school on Saturday, 7th of December, 2013. The event started with the arrival of the Chief Guest, Mr. Ajey Ranade IPS, The Commissioner of Police, Howrah Commissionerate, who kindly graced the occasion.
The first event of the meet was the March Past by the school students led by the School Prefect and their respective House Captains. The students marched proudly with military precision and perfect synchronization in their house colours to the tune of the Police Band. After the march past, there was the arrival of the torch followed by lighting of the flame by the Chief Guest. The athletes then took an oath, pledging to inculcate the spirit of sportsmanship within them.
The welcome address by the Rector, Rev. Fr. Biji Thomas followed by the Chief Guest’s address stressed on team-spirit and the need to be good citizens of India after which the Chief Guest declared the Annual Athletic Meet 2013-14 open to a thunderous applause from all.
The athletes competed with each other in various events such as 100m, 200m, 400m races, kangaroo race, 3-legged race, and the popular wheel barrow race. The younger boys enthusiastically took part in the sack race. Following this a splendid ‘Pyramid Formation and Acrobatics’ was put up by the students led by Mr. Bijay Singh. The school had much to cheer for them and their skilful display.
The drill display performed by the students of classes 6 to 8 under the able guidance of Mr. Richard Gomes and Mr. Elias Jabbar was indeed colourful and spectacular. It concluded with formations such as a human tree and the words ‘Go Green’ – the school motto for the year 2013-14.
The athletes also had much to cheer for during the Inter-House Relays, Grand Relay and the ever so popular Tug-o-War among the four houses. The students cried themselves hoarse in support of their respective houses. However, the Savio House and Rua House were champions in the Grand Relay and Tug-o-War respectively.
The teachers’ event, the past pupils' race and the non-teaching staff event earned good cheer from the students.
The day concluded with the final march past and distribution of prizes. Vecchi House won the trophy for March Past, Rua for discipline, and Magone for Tunnel Ball. The overall winners, Savio House with 517 points won the Winners’ Trophy. After the vote of thanks by the Principal, Rev. Br. Jose Puthenpurackal, all went home with memories of an eventful day.
